Mets Owner Steve Cohen Still Wants to Sell His $35 Million Beverly Hills Mansion

Steve Cohen has a preternatural ability to make huge sums of money, but his real estate track record hasn’t been nearly as enviable. It famously took the billionaire hedge fund mogul and New York Mets owner eight years to sell his N.Y.C. penthouse—all for a shocking $85 million less than he’d originally asked.

Now Cohen is facing a similar problem in Beverly Hills, where he can’t seem to locate a buyer for his West Coast outpost. First listed in May for $45 million, the compound’s price tag was slashed all the way down to $35 million last month—still, zero takers as of yet. One more strike and it’ll be out for Cohen, who could soon be facing a big loss on the property, so give him a call if you’re interested.

Cohen bought the estate exactly 10 years ago, paying $31 million. At that time, the rumor was he’d only purchased a place in L.A. because his twin daughters were attending USC and he was sick and tired of bunking up in hotels while in town. So the N.Y. native bought this giant, boutique hotel-like spread, which happens to lie immediately around the corner from the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel.

Monumental in scale and ultra-contemporary in design, the boxy house was built by successful spec-mansion developer Gala Asher, the same man responsible for the 90210 marital mansion Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez bought for $61 million and have now been trying to sell for ages. In Cohen’s case, there are nine bedrooms and 12 bathrooms packed into nearly 13,000 square feet of living space, all of it neatly dressed up with gleaming hardwood floors, high ceilings, and big walls ideal for a world-class art collector.

The main house is tri-level, with a full basement floor, and there are four “family” bedroom suites on the penthouse level, including a primary suite with dual baths, dual closets, and a private balcony overlooking the backyard. There are also two staff suites on the main level, ideal for a live-in housekeeper, estate manager, and/or security guard, and three detached guest “casitas,” making gracious landing places for family members or friends visiting town.

Also on the home’s main level are an office, where we imagine Cohen took plenty of Zoom calls over the years, a sleek kitchen open to a family room, and a fireside living room with a bar. Occupants can choose whether to take an elevator or the stairs to when making the trek to a different level of the home.

Downstairs is packed with resort-worthy amenities; per the listing, there’s a movie theater “with a receding blackout wall,” that opens to a games room and temperature-controlled wine storage room. The residence also offers subterranean garage parking for up to eight cars.

Though the property spans well over half an acre of land, the grounds aren’t particularly expansive—this is a huge house in the heart of Beverly Hills, after all—but they do include manicured hedgerows for complete privacy, substantial motorcourts to accommodate at-home galas, an AstroTurf lawn, a saltwater swimming pool, and a fire-pit lounge area serviced by an outdoor kitchen and barbecue center. And naturally, this place is also only moments away from the many luxury shopping and dining destinations in Beverly Hills and the surrounding areas.

Aside from his voracious appetite for art—his $1 billion modern art collection is practically unrivaled—Cohen also has an appetite for extraordinarily lavish personal residences. One of his more notable holdings is the two-mansion compound he recently built right on a bustling streetcorner in New York’s West Village neighborhood, which looks much more akin to a commercial building than a personal residence.

But as far as we know, the Cohen family’s main residence remains their titanic compound in Greenwich, Conn., which includes about 35,000 square feet of living space, plus a two-hole golf course and an ice skating rink.
