Billie Eilish was all of 17 years old when she paid Leona Lewis $2.2 million for her very first house, a gated and updated 1950s ranch-style residence tucked away in a decidedly unglamorous neighborhood pocket of Glendale, Calif.
In the five years since she acquired that place, Eilish has become arguably one of the biggest music stars on the planet, with nine Grammy awards and two Oscars to her name. So while she continues to own the Glendale home, it’s really no surprise that the L.A. native has majorly upgraded her local residential circumstances.
Property records reveal Eilish’s upgrade was actually consummated way back in spring 2023, when she paid a very adult $14 million for a rather striking celebrity-owned home. But the transaction flew completely under the radar for a couple of reasons; first, the house she bought was never publicly listed for sale, and the deal was inked off market. The property is also located in La Canada Flintridge, a sleepy but very affluent suburb of Los Angeles that is not typically associated with celebrity residents, although that is changing somewhat.
Sometimes known as the Kate Yuen house, the property in question spans nearly four acres on an oak tree-studded hillside. Gated and accessed via a very long, sinuously winding driveway, no part of the house itself is visible from the street. But it’s quite large — tax records say it features six bedrooms and seven bathrooms in nearly 7,000 square feet of living space.
Designed in the early 1980s by acclaimed architecture firm Buff & Hensman and built for a local family, the flat-roofed structure is a classic example of ‘80s modernism. And like many modern homes from that era, the place has a polarizing, love-it-or-hate it look. But keep in mind that the photos you see here date back to 2018, when the house was sold for just $4.2 million by its original owners to Donald Glover. It’s believed that the “Atlanta” star and prolific Hollywood multihyphenate subsequently gave the place an interior remodel, though the bones of the residence remain intact.
In any case, Glover certainly reaped a substantial profit on the clandestine sale to Eilish. According to our research, this $14 million, all-cash deal represents the most ever paid for a La Canada home.
Guests lucky enough to gain admittance to the Eilish estate will be greeted by an exceptionally large motorcourt with enough space to accommodate upwards of a dozen vehicles. Inside the house, soaring walls of glass and double-height ceilings make the public rooms feel even vaster than they already are; specific spaces include a family room, a very large formal living room, a kitchen with an eat-in banquette and a separate formal dining room.
All six of the bedrooms feature ensuite bathrooms, and the upstairs primary retreat boasts views of the surrounding treetops and hills. Out back, there’s also a very large outdoor patio surrounding a rectangular swimming pool and ample space for grand-scale al fresco entertaining.
While the house is certainly unique, the most stunning thing about the place remains its natural setting, with dozens of native live oak trees — some of them quite old — blanketing nearly the entire property.
As for anyone wondering why Eilish would choose to live in La Canada or neighboring Glendale rather than somewhere closer to Hollywood, she’s not exactly new to this area. As a child, Eilish and her older brother Finneas took gymnastics classes for several years at The Little Gym La Canada, and the “Ocean Eyes” singer famous spent much of her early teenage years hanging out at the Glendale Galleria mall, where she later shot the music video for her 2020 single “Therefore I Am.”
Other famous past and present La Canada residents include Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, Miley Cyrus, Vince Vaughn, Angela Bassett and “Grown-ish” star Yara Shahidi.
And as for Glover, he’s left Los Angeles entirely. Tax records reveal the 41-year-old and his wife Michelle White now reside in the scenic and semi-remote town of Ojai, about 80 miles northwest of L.A., where back in 2020 they shelled out $9.3 million for a historic, secluded estate that dates back to 1926 (above).
