Back in 2017, tech entrepreneur Joel Simkhai paid a neighborhood record $10.5 million for a house situated atop one of the highest ridgelines in Outpost Estates, a historic and celebrity-swarmed pocket of the Hollywood Hills. But the Grindr hookup app founder owned the property less than four years before dumping it for just $9.6 million to Dave Keuning, best known as the longtime guitarist of rock band The Killers. Naturally, in an only-in-L.A. kind of twist, Keuning is coming out of his cage, and he’s doing just fine—the Iowa native has flipped the walled and gated property for $12 million to Brad Pitt.
Originally built in the 1980s, the Mediterranean villa-style house was given an extensive contemporary makeover just before Simkhai’s purchase. And Keuning, together with his interior designer wife Emilie, just gave the interiors another overhaul, with lots of soothingly soft textures and off-white colors throughout. And when we say lots, we mean lots—the mansion-sized house packs six bedrooms and eight bathrooms into well over 8,000 square feet of living space.
Guests will be awed right off the bat by the double-height foyer, where the soaring wood-beam ceilings are set off by two massive bronze chandeliers. From there, a hallway spills into the monochromatic living room, where the fireplace, ceilings beams and walls have all been painted an off-white. Modern steel-and-glass French doors spill out to the hillside property’s various terraces.
Also on the main level are a den sporting a groovy tin ceiling, an office overlooking the pool area, and a sleek kitchen that’s open to the dining area and its sultry Murano glass chandelier.
There’s another Murano glass chandelier in the upstairs primary suite, which additionally flaunts a private balcony, a striking marble bathrooms with a soaking tub, and a fireplace. Elsewhere are a movie theater ideal for catching a “Fight Club” rerun, and a detached recording studio with a killer guitar selection.
Completely private and surrounded by trees, the backyard is party-ready with its freeform swimming pool and adjacent spa, plus the aforementioned terraces that host dedicated spaces for sunbathing, shaded lounging, and al fresco dining serviced by a built-in barbecue station and fire-pit.
Despite all of that luxury, the real showstopper here—and much of the reason for the property’s $12 million price tag—are the incredible views, which we’d wager are among the best in the Hollywood Hills. Beginning with jetliner vistas of the Downtown L.A. skyline, they sweep over Beverly Hills and Century City on their way to the Pacific Ocean and Catalina.
But those views are nothing new to Pitt, who is a veteran Hollywood Hills resident. For nearly 30 years he owned a multi-house compound elsewhere in the area; the 61-year-old finally sold that place in 2023 to oil heiress Aileen Getty, who paid a record-breaking $33 million for the village-like spread. Pitt simultaneously bought Getty’s $5.5 million Los Feliz house, which astute fans may know was burglarized just weeks ago.
Pitt, 61, also still owns half of the fabled Chateau Miraval vineyard estate in France, but his main residence nowadays is reportedly the seaside Carmel Highlands house (above) he purchased for $40 million about three years ago.
